Creativity Is the Differentiation

AI can generate working code in minutes. What it cannot do is care — about the craft, the detail, the feeling a product leaves behind. That gap is where creativity becomes the only durable competitive edge.

I was listening to Lenny's podcast and one idea kept surfacing: creativity is becoming — or already is — the primary differentiator in digital products.

I fully agree. And I think most builders haven't caught up to what that means yet.

#The Floor Just Rose

Five minutes with Claude produces working, shippable code. It is not always elegant. It is often generic. But it runs, and it ships.

This matters because "functional" used to be a meaningful bar. Getting something to work required skill, time, and money. Now it does not. The floor rose, and it rose for everyone simultaneously.

When the floor is functional, the ceiling becomes creative.

#Steering Is a Skill

AI does not differentiate by itself. What differentiates is how well you direct it. Two developers can describe the same feature to the same model and get wildly different results — not because the model treated them differently, but because one knew precisely what they wanted and could articulate it.

Even a minimal amount of creative direction produces a noticeable difference in output quality. Knowing what you want, why it should feel a certain way, and which details matter — that is a skill the model cannot supply for you.

The people who will do exceptional work with AI are not the ones who know the best prompts. They are the ones with strong taste and the patience to push until the output matches their vision.

#We Finally Have Time for the Things That Matter

Here is the part I find genuinely exciting: as designers, builders, and developers, we finally have time and space for the work we always said we would do if only we had time.

Micro-interactions on every design system element. Architectural decisions made deliberately, before a side project becomes a mess. Custom tools that encode your own opinions into the codebase — opinions the AI cannot overrule. You no longer need to reach for a complicated third-party tool because you can build your own, and you can migrate to the complicated tool later, when you actually need it.

The work that's the hardest will still require manual input, and the expertise cannot be replaced, probably because AI is just as impressive as it is a token prediction machine. The experts won't be replaced at all.

The ceiling on craft just got higher. The bottleneck is skewed in direction of taste, not throughput.

#You Can Finish Things Now

There is another shift worth naming: you can finish your projects.

Not perfectly. Not in one sprint. But you can get to good enough, ship it, step away, and come back when inspiration hits. The gap between idea and running software collapsed. Deployment can be automated even by someone who is not an infrastructure expert, and you can improve it incrementally once you care enough to.

That changes the calculus entirely. Unfinished projects used to die because the next hard thing required too much activation energy. Now the next hard thing is usually a conversation.

Also, just psychologically, I was starting multiple projects, but I lacked that willpower or time, or both, to finish them. Now I can more easily call them good enough and iterate with them, so I'm proud of them. I can see that it's worth using or worth continuing.

#A Full Development Flow From a Phone

The most concrete version of all this: you can now run a real development workflow from your phone.

Claude Code, the Vercel PWA, Keystatic, GitHub — the full loop works. A lot of coding can happen in mobile Claude or Codex. You review, adjust, and deploy. It was theoretically possible before, but it was a mess. Now it is actually working.

I would be a hypocrite if I did not mention that I wrote most of this article on mobile while on the go.

That is the point. The friction is lesser gone, the fun can be greater. What remains is what you choose to make with the time that frees up and don't let aI WiLl rEpLaCe uS all haters spoil the good thing.
